NABA-Elite was deeply saddened to hear about the sudden passing last night of a great friend and a class act...Joe Astengo. So many of you (my friends) are interconnected through baseball and as such, I wanted to reach out to each of you as you likely crossed paths with Joe over the years through MSBL, NABA and most recently through the Bud Kuhl Woodbat Events at Angel Stadium. Two years ago just a couple of days before our Bud Kuhl Event, Joe had a severe heart attack that required the addition of a pacemaker yet there he was, in the stands watching and supporting his players determined to get back out there again. Totally undeterred by his pacemaker, Joe was back on the diamond the next spring determined to lead a normal life. We were fortunate enough to have been able to have Joe and his team participate in this past November's event at the stadium. Once again, Joe organized the squad, managed the team, played and as always made sure everyone received playing time and enjoyed the event.
The most enduring benefit that comes from playing sports is the people we meet and the relationships we develop. For those of you who knew Joe, I'm sure, like me, you considered him a class act, and a good friend. Please let me know if you would like to be updated as to any pending services and I'm sure someone on this thread who also considered Joe a great friend will update us. Until then, I'm sure you will also join me in passing along our deepest sympathies to his family as their loss is the hardest.
There will be a memorial service for Joe at Saint Pius V Catholic Church @ 10AM Friday 2/23. 7691 Orangethorpe Avenue, Buena Park, CA 90621.
Joe will be missed! This 2018 Season is dedicated to the memory of Joe!
